Aston Villa fans have taken to Twitter to discuss the latest news surrounding Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier.
This comes after Villa journalist Dan Bardell shared a post on his official Twitter page sharing his opinion on Dier’s actions after Spurs’ FA Cup defeat on penalties to Norwich City.
Bardell said that he believes Dier was “fully entitled” to do what he did, which saw the Englishman climb into a section of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to confront a fan that was reportedly insulting him.
Was Eric Dier right to confront the fan in the stadium?
Yes, he did nothing wrong
No, he shouldn't have done that
The Villa man also added that it was “time the morons that spend all game abusing players/players families had some accountability” for their actions.
This post then gathered a lot of replies from fellow Villa fans who were eager to share their own thoughts on the situation.
Here’s a sample of Villa fans responding to the post:
In my opinion @ericdier fully entitled to do what he did last night. About time the morons that spend all game abusing players/players families had some accountability.

So what your saying is if something hurts your feelings you can break the law?

Setting a very dangerous prescient this. Fans are not fair game for players to go head to head with, regardless if they’re family or not. We’d all like to think we’d do what Dier did, but in reality it’s completely wrong.

I think it’s a step too far from a professional footballer. This should be down to the stewards to sort. He has no business going up into the stands in my opinion. I can see both sides but he is a professional and should know better than to get involved.

Not only did this post gathered lots of replies from Villa fans with their own opinions on the matter, but it sparked a big debate with plenty of differing opinions.

I totally agree ….. when is society going to understand it’s not ok to abuse people on the football pitch , Twitter etc etc Rich , poor , famous not famous , successful unsuccessful we are all human this has to stop. The world has gone mad ! Where is the compassion for others

Footballers are humans, why do people forget this? Not the same situation but when Caroline Flack died everyone on social media went viral with #BeKind, why don’t people practise what they preach? Critiscm is one thing, abuse is another entirely.

What do we think?
It appears that Dier’s actions and Bardell’s assessment of the situation has completely split the opinions of these Villa fans with some agreeing that Dier was right to confront the fan, whereas others think he shouldn’t have got involved at all. At the end of the day, footballers are human beings with the same feelings and emotions as any fan, but whatever the fan must have said to anger Dier must have been serious to make him react the way he did.
