Fans of Tottenham have been reacting to a post on Twitter, which informs of alleged interest in Jan Vertonghen from Italian giants Inter Milan.

Vertonghen, who joined Spurs from Ajax in 2012, has made 309 appearances for the North London club, scoring 13 goals and providing seven assists.

This season, however, the 32-year-old’s playing time has been limited, starting just 63% of Tottenham’s league fixtures, and with the Belgian international’s contract expiring this summer, it is expected that he will leave Spurs on a free transfer, according to the Evening Standard.

Inter Milan are thought to be a potential destination for the £16.2 million-rated Vertonghen, with the Italian club showing interest in the defender, having already purchased another of Tottenham’s players, Christian Eriksen, earlier this year.

In reaction to the news, Spurs fans have taken to Twitter, with many appearing to accept that it is best for both the club and player that he makes a summer move.

One fan even suggested former Spurs star Christian Eriksen was behind this rumour. Of course, this may have been stated sarcastically due to the reports that suggested Eriksen and Vertonghen didn’t share the best of relationships, with the former supposedly giving him a black eye.

What do we think?

Regardless of the current situation surrounding his future, over his nine years at the North London club, Vertonghen has established himself as a true Tottenham stalwart.

However, the fact remains that his performances this season have been below the standards that Spurs fans have come to expect, something which Vertonghen himself appeared to realise following his substitution in Spurs’ 3-2 FA Cup victory over Southampton.

With this in mind, a summer move would likely suit all parties.
