Middlesbrough’s England Under-20 international Marcus Tavernier has signed a new three-and-a-half-year contract with the club. The player has been with Boro since he was playing Under-14 level football and has progressed through the club’s youth system.

The 20-year-old has had a fantastic season so far and has received plenty of praise from his boss Jonathan Woodgate who described him as a player he was “keen to get tied up as soon as we could because of what he brings to the team.

It’s not just the coaching staff who are pleased to have seen Tavernier put pen-to-paper, the fans are thrilled too.

What do we think?

Marcus Tavernier is making quite the impression this season and has now established himself as a regular. To date, he’s made 23 appearances in the Championship this season, scoring two goals and providing three assists.

If he continues to progress at the level we’ve seen in recent months. you suspect it may not be long before some of the Premier League clubs start sniffing around him, therefore, the fact he’s signed a new long-term deal puts the club in a much stronger position; it’s a huge boost to Boro.
