Aston Villa fans have been fuming on Twitter over Danny Drinkwater’s debut against Manchester City.
This comes after Villa fan Twitter account @astonforza shared a post on their page asking their followers what they thought about Drinkwater’s debut in the 6-1 defeat to Pep Guardiola’s side.
This post then led to a large number of Villa fans replying with their opinions on Drinkwater’s first appearance in a Villa shirt.
Was Dean Smith right to start Drinkwater against City?
Yes
No
Here’s a sample of Villa fans discussing Drinkwater’s debut:
Pretty poor but this isn’t the game he should be judged on….

Smith should not have thrusted him in the game when the guy has hardly played over the past 24 months. Smiths made some howlers this year

Abysmal but he was thrown to the sharks. Terrible decision by Smith whose still stubbornly refusing to admit he got it wrong.

Douglas Luiz is a waste of a shirt. Provides no protection for the defence at all.
Drinkwater looks a joke.
The three man defence is exposed.
The wing backs are useless.the forwards aren’t in the game.
Smith is out of ideas.#AVFC

The Englishman, who is currently valued at £5.4 million according to TransferMarkt, recently joined the Birmingham club from Chelsea on a loan deal until the end of the season (per TransferMarkt). His first match as a Villa player saw visitors City score six goals in the match, with four being let in before half time, and he received a rather disappointing rating of 4.77 for his efforts (as per WhoScored).
After the match, a lot of Villa fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on Drinkwater’s performance in the heavy defeat.
Awful, can pass but looked rusty as anything and cost at least two goals

One of the worst debuts I’ve seen but it’s his first game so give him a chance

He’s not match fit and looked it. Have to wonder why Smith didn’t make any changes at half time.

What do we think?
Drinkwater’s first appearance in the Premier League this season came in in Burnley’s 4-1 defeat to City back in December. With hindsight, making Drinkwater make his Villa debut against City at the weekend felt like he was being fed to the sharks, making it a very difficult match to start his Villa career in.
