Premiership giants Celtic can only sign Victor Wanyama if Tottenham subsidise the midfielder’s wages.

The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshire has provided an update on Celtic’s pursuit of the midfielder. He said that it is unlikely that the Hoops sign Wanyama this month, as the player will not accept wages that are less than £65k-a week. That isn’t a wage that Neil Lennon’s men can afford to pay, Eccleshire says.

Should Celtic give up on Wanyama?

But the only way they can sign him is if Spurs subsidise the midfielder’s wages, but the Lilywhites are more keen on sending him to a club that can afford to pay his whole salary.

An outcast at Tottenham

Wanyama has made only five appearances in all competitions for Spurs this season. He has made only one appearance under Jose Mourinho and it came in the club’s 3-1 loss to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League, when the Kenyan could play only nine minutes.

The 2016-17 season was the most important one of Wanyama’s Tottenham career. He made 47 appearances in all competitions, scoring five times and racking up one assist. Spurs had finished second in the Premier League that season.

Since the 2016-17 season, Wanyama has missed 47 games in all competitions due to knee problems. This has led to a lesser amount of game time, as he made only 22 appearances in all competitions last season too.

TIF Tactics

Celtic have already signed a midfielder in Ismaila Soro this month and for a player who will demand high wages, it will not make sense to shell out pointless money. They already have Soro, who can play in defensive midfield like Wanyama does and it is time to stop in the chase for the Kenyan.
