Some Southampton fans have made it clear that they will be very happy if the club ends up signing Joakim Mæhle and Mohamed Salisu in the ongoing January transfer window.

The Saints have already been linked with both the players, with Sky Sports having reported that they are looking to sign the Genk right-back. Sky have also claimed that Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men want to Real Vallodolid’s Salisu, as they look to bolster their defence this very month.

Salisu has a release clause of £10.2million and Southampton have already scouted him, along with some other clubs.

A Saints’ Twitter account called #IngsForBallonDor asked the club’s faithful’s as to whether they’d be happy with the signings of the players. And the other Southampton fans made it clear that they will be pleased if it happens.

Southampton’s current right-back options are Cedric Soares and young Yan Valery, with Cedric still the club’s first choice. He has played 16 times in all competitions so far, with 13 of them coming in the Premier League.

As for Maehle, he is 22 and is Genk’s first-choice right-back. He has made 26 appearances in all competitions for them this season. He has a tally one goal and four assists, playing 18 times in the Belgian league for the club.

He was a regular last season too. He made 54 appearances in all competitions for them. He scored four times and also racked up an impressive tally of ten assists.

As for Salisu, he has been Valladolid’s first-choice central defender this season. He has made 19 appearances in the La Liga for them.

What do we think?

These two signings will fix Southampton’s defensive issues and they do need fixing. The club has conceded the second-most number of goals in the Premier League this season, standing at 38. Salisu and Genk will do a lot to improve that.
