Some Celtic fans are chuffed about Jonny Hayes, his performance and behaviour in the club’s recent 1-0 win in the League Cup final on Sunday.

The Hoops won their 19th League Cup crown at the weekend, as a Christopher Jullien strike in the second-half handed Neil Lennon his first title win in the competitions. It was the only trophy he had not won before Sunday.

Apart from the goal, two more moments drew attention. Alfredo Morelos had a penalty saved by Fraser Forster, while Jeremie Frimpong was sent off. Despite that, Celtic held on for the win (BBC).

Celtic fans: Does Hayes deserve a new deal?

Jonny Hayes had started the game at left-back, alongside Kristoffer Ajer, Jullien and Frimpong. Some Hoops fans are hailing the utility man’s performance.

The Hoops are currently at the top of the Premiership table, with Hayes having played nine times in the league this season. He has scored once during this time, with that goal coming against Rangers in the Old Firm early in the campaign. In all competitions, he has played 18 times, with two of his assists coming in the League Cup.

Last season, the left-sided midfielder played 22 times in all competitions for the Hoops. He racked up a tally of three assists during that time, playing a total of 1093 minutes too.

The Irishman has shown his versatility this season, playing not just in left midfield or at left-back, but also playing at left wing-back in the Europa League against Lazio.

He had joined the club in the summer of 2017 from Aberdeen during Brendan Rodgers’ reign for an undisclosed fee, while signing a three-year-deal at Parkhead. His current deal at the club runs out in the summer of 2020.

What do we think?

Hayes has been crucial for the club this season. He has been used in important games like the Old Firm derbies and the big Europa League games against Lazio, Cluj and Rennes. He was recently injured but he’s returned from that knee problem now. His versatility has been crucial and he has done a lot for the club to deserve a new deal.
