Spurs fans were less than impressed to hear that Heung-Min Son had been selected below Arsenal’s Pierre Emerick Aubameyang in the Ballon d’Or 2019 ratings.
The South Korean forward was rewarded with 22nd place in the overall rankings, whilst Aubameyang came in at 20th place (via DailyHotspur). Although Aubameyang won the golden boot in the Premier League last season, Son was instrumental in Spurs’ run to the Champions League final last season and fans felt he should have been rated significantly higher than the Arsenal forward.
The 27-year-old has established himself as a real fan favourite since joining from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, with 76 goals in his 206 appearances for the North London side. Son was recently awarded with the Asian Footballer of the Year award for the third successive year but that wasn’t enough to see him secure a top 20 finish at Monday night’s awards.
Who should've been rated higher in the Ballon d'Or rankings?
Heung-Min Son
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
Reaction from Spurs fans to Son’s Ballon d’Or ranking can be seen in the tweets below.

Auba didn’t even win the African player of the year. Surely Son, the two time Asian player of the year should be ahead of him.

Nonsense

These Spurs fans were clearly not impressed with Son’s ranking and felt that the 27-year-old’s performances this year warranted a much higher finish.
What do we think?
Aubameyang may have scored more goals last season but over the calendar year, Son played arguably a bigger part as he was hugely important in Spurs’ run to the Champions League final last season. This season Aubameyang has averaged just a 6.99 rating compared to Son’s 7.54 rating which suggests that the South Korean forward is currently miles ahead of the Gabonese striker in this campaign, so perhaps the rankings will be different next year.
