Shaun Wright-Phillips made 262 appearances for Manchester City but strangely found himself on the opposing side when the Cityzens famously won the title at the Etihad courtesy of that famous Sergio Aguero goal.

Speaking to talkSPORT on Wednesday afternoon, Wright-Phillips has admitted he wanted City to win despite wearing the colours of QPR.

“I wanted City to win the title, of course I did,” the 38-year-old told talkSPORT. “But at the same time, I didn’t want QPR to go down, and we didn’t know enough.

Does Wright-Phillips' admission show a lack of professionalism?

“I was like, ‘does this mean we’re down? Am I meant to be happy?’

“It was weird. I was playing for QPR and I’m a professional, so my heart was there. But I have another heart, which is for City; it would be great to be around and see them win the title.”

Indeed, those remarks may have been initially surprising, or perhaps even shocking, however, should they knock people off their feet? Probably not.

We all support a football team so can understand why, despite leaving the club, Shaun Wright-Phillips’ heart was still beating blue – even when playing for the opposition. However, you do wonder if he would have made such an admission had Queens Park Rangers suffered relegation that day.

His comments will have gone down well with the City fans listening in but those of a QPR persuasion may have been a little disappointed by the former player’s comments. Wright-Phillips went on to play out the rest of his days as a professional in the United States.
