Some Portsmouth are feeling nostalgic after the club’s Twitter account posted a video of Matt Taylor’s sensational goal against Everton back in 2006 at Goodison Park.
Those were the days when Pompey were still in the Premier League and Taylor’s screamer helped them claim their first win at Goodison Park since November 1957. The goal saw them pick up a 2-0 win over the Liverpool-based side.
Taylor had struck a first-time volley from 45 yards out on that day in the 14th minute of the game, leaving Toffees’ goalkeeper Tim Howard rooted to the spot and stunned in his position.
Nwankwo Kanu, who had assisted Taylor for his goal, had scored the second goal of the game to finish the Merseysiders off.

Taylor was at the club for a six-year period and stayed at Fratton Park from 2002 to 2008. He was part of the side that was promoted into the Premier League. He had helped the club achieve promotion in the summer of 2003.
He had joined the club from Luton Town in the summer of 2002 for a fee of £540k (via Transfermarkt). During his time at the club, Taylor had played as many as 193 times in all competitions for the side. He scored 24 times during this time, racking up three assists as well.
In his last season at the club, Taylor played 13 times in the Premier League in the 2007-08 campaign, scoring once and assisting once. After that, he moved to Bolton in the summer of 2008. His last club was Swindon Town, where he was playing till last season and retired this past summer.
What do we think?
Taylor’s goal was history-making and it is rightly one of the best goals for the club in the 21st century. More than that, the fact that Taylor was an icon for the club during his playing days makes it even more special.
