Some Celtic fans have been left emotional at the sight of watching former defender Mikael Lustig play for the club from the days gone by.

Lustig, now 32, is currently plying his trade with Belgian club Genk and had been at Celtic from January 2012 till the summer of 2019 (per BBC).

During this time in Scotland, Lustig had won the Scottish Premiership title as many as eight times for the club. He had also won the Scottish Cup on four occasions, winning the League Cup four times- playing under both Neil Lennon and Brendan Rodgers.

A video of Lustig defending for Celtic went viral and some of the club’s fans could not control their emotions.

For Genk this season, the Swede has played nine times in the Belgian league. He has also played ten times in the Europa League for the club, with six of them coming in the qualification round of the tournament.

Last season for Celtic, Lustig had featured 44 times in all competitions for the club. He had also played some games at centre-back but managed to rack up a tally of nine assists as well.

Throughout his seven-year stay at Celtic Park, Lustig had featured as many as 276 times in all competitions for the side. He had scored 21 times in total, racking up a tally of 40 assists as well.

Some Celtic fans hailed Lustig for the service he gave to the club.

What do we think?

The fact that Lustig, who is valued at £2.25 million (Transfermarkt), was at the club for seven years is a reflection of how much the club meant to him. Currently, Scott Brown is the club’s longest-serving player since he has been there for 12 years now. James Forrest comes second because of his nine-year-long stay. Tom Rogic comes third as he has been at the Glasgow for six years now, but Lustig would have been third in the list if he had stayed. That shows how important he was. And at 32, perhaps, he could have still done a good job in the defence.
