Spurs fans were singing the praises of new manager Jose Mourinho after he made it clear that his main priority in January is to sort out the defence of his new club.

According to the Telegraph (via HotspurRelated) the 56-year-old will focus on improving Spurs’ faltering back-line, but may have to subside incoming transfers with the sales of some first-team players. Mourinho was appointed Spurs boss earlier in the week, following the shock dismissal of Mauricio Pochettino, and the former Manchester United and Chelsea boss has wasted no time in making his transfer window intentions clear.

It is no surprise that Mourinho is targeting defensive improvements, with Spurs having kept just one clean sheet in the Premier League so far this season, a statistic that is only matched by bottom-of-the-league Norwich City.

The Portuguese boss has won three separate Premier League titles with Chelsea, so he certainly knows what his doing, but he does have a slight point to prove after his time at Manchester United.

Reaction from Spurs fans to the news that Mourinho is planning to improve their defence can be seen in the tweets below.

Spurs fans are clearly delighted that Mourinho is planning on improving the defence, with many feeling that is the key to improving their form and moving back up the table.

What do we think?

It will be interesting to see how the likes of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld perform under Mourinho as they are possibly playing for their futures. If Mourinho can restore those two to top form and maybe bring in some full-backs to replace Danny Rose and Serge Aurier, then you would expect Spurs to start picking up clean sheets again.
