Some Manchester United are desperate to see their club sign RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner in the upcoming January transfer window.

United have been linked with the German in recent days, with a report from the Mirror claiming that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men will look to beat Liverpool in the race for the former Stuttgart man.

Interestingly, Werner signed a new four-year contract with Leipzig in the summer, but the agreement included a buy-out clause of just £27 million.

Werner attracted everyone’s attention this past weekend when he got a hat-trick of goals and assists in Leipzig’s 8-0 win over Mainz at the Red Bull Arena. This was Werner’s fifth goal in two games, as he had grabbed a brace in Die Rotten Bullen’s 6-1 win over Wolfsburg in the DFB Pokal in mid-week.

Werner, 23, has been one of Leipzig’s most important players since he joined the club in the summer of 2016. This was the time when Leipzig were playing their first-ever campaign in the Bundesliga after their promotion in the 2015-16 campaign.

In his first season, the German scored 21 times in the Bundesliga and racked up a tally of five assists in the league. This season, he has found the back of the net nine times and has assisted three times.

Despite that, he finds himself at the second spot in the highest scorers tally this season. He is five goals behind Robert Lewandowski, who has already scored 14 times (BBC).

Some United fans though, felt that this is a ploy by Ed Woodward to take attention away from the defeat at Bournemouth.

Werner signed a new deal at Leipzig this past summer, extending his stay till the summer of 2023. But Kicker stated that the new deal has a release clause of about £26 million (€30 million)

What do we think?

United’s failure to replace Romelu Lukaku has left them without a striker who can get around 20 goals a season. Werner has scored 59 league goals during his time in East Germany, showing how potent a goal-getter he can be for a Champions League club.

Considering how low his release clause is, United just have to make a move for Werner. There is a chance they do end up signing him – either in the summer or in January, but it would not be a surprise if they faced significant competition for him.
