Sunderland were knocked out of the Football League Cup this week after a tense penalty kick shootout favoured the home team. After the match with Oxford, manager Phil Parkinson spoke about the game.

The manager placed a lot of blame on the referees who, he claimed, missed two obvious penalty calls during the match. He also suggested that the team played better in the second half and were good during the first.

After listening to the manager’s comments, fans were visibly upset with how he talked. Some fans admit that the Parkinson doesn’t have a lot to work with, while others demand more, insisting that the football being played under the new manager’s regime is not good enough. Another fan disagrees that they were the better team completely. They just don’t think the partnership of Sunderland and Parkinson is destined to succeed.

Other fans rolled their eyes at the cliched ‘we go again’ attitude shown by Parkinson.

What do we think?

Despite the cup leaving a bitter taste in fans’ mouths, fewer cup games could be just what the Black Cats need to get their league momentum rolling. While it may be cliched, Sunderland ‘go again’ against Southend United this weekend. With his team under fire from fans, Parkinson’s men need a big result.
