Some Chelsea fans have been slating full-back Marcos Alonso on Twitter after the Spaniard’s poor performance in the 2-1 Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester United on Wednesday.

This backlash comes off the back of Chelsea journalist Simon Phillips tweeting his own frustrations with Alonso, calling the full-back “average”.

This tweet then attracted a lot of Chelsea fans who were quick to agree with Phillips’ opinion on the 28-year-old.

Here’s a sample of Chelsea fans slating Alonso on Twitter:

Alonso was at fault for giving away the penalty that Marcus Rashford scored to put the visitors ahead in the first half. After that, Chelsea managed to equalise through Michy Batshuayi before a sensational Rashford free-kick won the game for the Ole Gunnar-Solskjaer’s side (BBC Sport).

A large chunk of Chelsea fans have laid the blame of the defeat at the feet of Alonso for his clumsy tackle in the first-half that won United their penalty.

What do we think?

The challenge on Rashford from Alonso was a sloppy one, and the Spaniard didn’t really do much else in the match to make up for his mistake early on.

Emerson Palmieri was one the substitutes’ bench against Ajax but hasn’t featured since last month.

When comparing the two full-backs, despite having played 556 fewer minutes than Alonso in all competitions this season, Emerson has a better defensive record than the Spaniard. Emerson has an average of 3 tackles and 2 interceptions per game (WhoScored) compared to Alonso’s 1.9 and 1.3 per game (per WhoScored), so you could say that bringing Palmieri back into the fold should benefit the Blues defensively.
