After losing out to Oxford in the Football League Cup, Sunderland are back at it again on the weekend against Southend United. A win would be vital considering the Black Cats are just three points behind a play-off spot (BBC).

Utilita Football asked fans who they would most like to see score in the fixture. While many fans would be content with anyone scoring, so long as it resulted in a win, Will Grigg’s name made quite a few appearances in the replies below the tweet.

Many fans explained that the main reason for picking Grigg is because they want to see the 28-year-old regain some confidence. Another fan doesn’t just want the striker to score one goal, but to bag himself a hattrick.

What do we think?

A goal could be exactly what Grigg needs to get his campaign back on track. The former Northern Ireland international would have arrived at the Stadium of Light with a weight of expectation following his £4m January 2019 move (BBC), although he has failed to justify that rather large sum of money so far.

The 28-year-old garnered a reputation of being prolific in League One, having bagged himself 96 goals in 258 appearances for the likes of Wigan Athletic, MK Dons, Brentford and Walsall, however he has since managed just five goals in 34 outings for the Black Cats since that move almost 12 months ago.

If manager Phil Parkinson can get the striker firing on all cylinders, it would be a massive boost for the team’s playoff spot objectives.
