Some Swansea City fans are delighted with the performance of Wayne Routledge during Sunday’s South Wales Derby in the Championship.

Steve Cooper’s men came back to winning ways on Sunday when a Ben Wilmot strike in the 24th minute proved enough for the Swans to pick up all three points in the derby.

This was Routledge’s second start in the Championship and he has previously appeared twice from the bench this season. He has scored once and that goal proved to the winner for the club in their 1-0 win over Leeds United.

He racked up his first assist of the season against Cardiff and the fans are delighted with his performance.

Routledge has been at the Liberty Stadium-based side since the summer of 2011 when he joined the club from Newcastle United. Since arriving, he has appeared 267 times in all competitions for the Swans, scoring 29 times and assisting 37 times.

He has previously played for Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, Fulham, Queens Park Rangers, Crystal Palace and the Magpies. He also had a loan spell at Cardiff in the previous decade, where he played only nine times but scored twice.

His longevity has also seen him become one of the fans’ favourites at the club. The fans hailed that recently.

The win against Neil Warnock’s men lifted the Swans up to fourth in the Championship, level on points with Preston and Leeds. They are currently only two points behind West Bromwich Albion, who are the top of the league with 27 points.

This was the club’s first league win in four games and before that, they had won only a single game in the previous eight games.

They had started the season very well and were unbeaten in their first six league games.

What do we think?

There is little doubting as to how much Routledge means to Swansea. Even at the age of 34, he is winning games for the club and coming up with match-winning performances in big games. He brings the experience that no one else has. Younger players like Bersant Celina and Yan Dhanda can only watch and learn from him.
