Aston Villa are keen on making a move for Brighton defender Lewis Dunk, according to the Sun.

The 27-year-old played 38 times for the Seagulls in all competitions last season, scoring twice in the process, and is understood to be high on Dean Smith’s summer wish list.

The 6’3″ colossus [Transfermarkt] made his England debut in November of last year in a 3-0 win over the United States.

Good move for Villa?

Without a doubt. Dunk has consistently been one of Brighton’s most impressive assets since their promotion to the top flight, and there barely seems to be a week go by when he isn’t putting in some kind of last ditch goal saving challenge or other. His natural physicality makes him an ideal marshal for a Premier League backline, and for a side wanting to reestablish themselves as a force at the highest table he would be a very savvy investment.

Likely to happen?

The Sun report is very specific about Dunk being a target for Villa, and you can’t help feeling that the club wouldn’t pile in on a transfer target if they didn’t think that they had a reasonable chance of landing him. That being said, Brighton aren’t going to let their star defender go in a hurry, especially to a side who could well be a relegation rival this season. This one isn’t impossible, but it will be a very expensive one for the Villans to pull off.
