Stuart Pearce revealed that he thought Manchester City still needed to strengthen their side in the transfer window despite winning the Premier League in their latest campaign.

The former Man City player shared that he thinks Pep Guardiola’s side would benefit from a new centre-back, a new holding midfielder and a new striker being added to the squad.

Pearce pointed out that a holding midfielder was definitely required just in case Fernandinho ended up missing a notable period of the 2019/20 season.

“I think all teams need to strengthen no matter who they are,” said Pearce on Sky Sports News (Thursday June 13th, 12:04pm).

“Just to get a fresh face in the dressing room, Man City with Kompany leaving that leaves an issue at the centre of defence, I think as well the holding midfield role as well as if they lose Fernandinho for any period of time, which they did last season, would cause them problems.

“And I always think upfront, you can always strengthen with a striker.”

OPINION

Pearce may have a point that a couple of new faces should arrive, but Man City shouldn’t make signings for the sake of it. There’s no need to sign a new centre-forward for example as what would be the point? Guardiola already has Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus to call upon and it’s not often he uses a formation where he plays two forwards on the pitch at the same time. So having two top-class forwards to call upon is enough. Imagine if Man City added a new striker to their books and it caused problems. This could potentially happened as whoever they opted to sign would no doubt be expecting to play and it could disrupt the happy atmosphere that seems to be in the club’s dressing room currently. As for Pearce’s other suggestions, they makes sense. With Vincent Kompany leaving then Man City could do with another centre-back to call upon, however even if one doesn’t arrive, they do have enough to get by. As after all John Stones could always be handed more opportunities.
