Aston Villa are interested in signing Antwerp right-back Daniel Opare, according to The Sun.

The newspaper claims that the 28-year-old – who has a year left on his contract at the Belgian club – is available for £500,000 this summer.

The Sun adds that if Antwerp are going to let the 19-time Ghana international go at any point, they hope it will be this summer to avoid losing him for free this time next year.

Good move for Villa?

On the face of it, this wouldn’t be a great signing for Aston Villa. Opare made 24 appearances in all competitions for Antwerp but offered nothing going forward, making no assists or chipping in with no goals. Yes, he is a right-back, but the modern player in that position needs to offer a good deal of creativity going forward, and going off his stats for last term, he would not be a wise investment. Having said that, if Dean Smith’s side are looking for squad players for their first season back in the Premier League, a £500,000 transfer fee means they would not lose much if he was to come in and perform below-par.

Likely to happen?

The Sun’s report adds that Norwich City – who were also promoted to the Premier League – are also looking into the possibility of signing Opare, possibly for many of the same reasons as Villa. This could just be a case of where the player wants to move to most, if he is intent on leaving that is.
