Rangers are on the verge of ending their pursuit of Oldham defender George Edmundson, according to the Scottish Sun.

The national newspaper claim that the Gers have seen three bids rejected for the 6ft 3in tall centre-back (Source: Transfermarkt) with the latest believed to be around the £600,000 mark.

The Scottish Sun report that Rangers are reluctant to offer any more than that amount and will look at alternatives if Oldham don’t lower their asking price.

Sky Sports previously reported that Oldham were holding out for up to £1million for Edmundson even though the enforcer has handed in a transfer request.

Good move for Rangers?

Mixed bag.

Edmundson would be a fantastic signing for Steven Gerrard to make as he would boost the club’s defensive options, but if the Gers don’t want to get closer to meeting Oldham’s demand, why bother wasting time?

The 21-year-old enforcer is a powerful presence at the back and wowed in the 54 outings he made across all competitions in his 2018/19 campaign.

Edmundson is not just a rock at the back but is also a threat going forward due to his physical presence, shown by the fact he got five assists as well as two goals for Oldham in his latest campaign.

Likely to happen?

Yes, the Gers seem about to end their interest in Edmundson.

Rangers clearly don’t want to pay the amount Oldham want for Edmundson otherwise they would have done it by now, rather than submit three offers destined to be rejected.

The 21-year-old tried to force his club’s hand by submitting a transfer request but it hasn’t appeared to work.

So with that in mind, it does seem like it’s time for Rangers to pull the plug on their desire for Edmundson and start working on trying to sign other centre-backs instead.

This unfortunately means for Rangers fans, that Edmundson doesn’t seem to be Ibrox-bound anytime soon.
