Rangers have held talks with defender Martin Olsson with Steven Gerrard in the market for a new left back, according to the Scottish Sun.

The national newspaper claim that the 31-year-old flyer held talks with Rangers chiefs last week after Swansea confirmed, via their official website, that the defender would leave their club at the end of June upon his current contract expiring.

The Scottish Sun report that Rangers aren’t alone in their hunt to sign Olsson as Martin O’Neill’s Nottingham Forest are also poised to offer him a deal.

Good move for Rangers?

Yes.

The 31-year-old left-back may have had an injury-riddled 2018/19 campaign for the Swans, he managed only 17 appearances, but he is worth taking a chance on.

Olsson has previously proven himself as a good left-back at an international level, he has 47 caps for Sweden, and has proven himself in England’s top-flight as he has featured 197 times in the Premier League.

While the experienced left-back’s best years are clearly behind him, given his top-level experience and the fact he’d be able to be snapped up on a free transfer; what are the Gers waiting for?

Likely to happen?

There’s a very good chance.

Given that the Scottish Sun’s report makes clear that Gerrard needs a left-back then Olsson may be open to joining the Gers as that surely implies he’ll get playing time if he rocks up at Ibrox.

Also the Gers have acted quickly to show Olsson they’re serious about signing him by having talks, so surely that will give them a good chance of landing him.

The only question mark over this deal is whether Olsson would rather join Rangers or stay in English football by signing for Nottingham Forest as it seems they’re poised to table an offer.

However all Rangers can do is wait, as according to the Scottish Sun the 31-year-old is on holiday and assessing his options.
