Jackie McNamara has suggested that Rangers could be making a mistake in allowing left-back Lee Wallace to leave the club this summer.

Wallace is believed to be close to securing a move away from Ibrox on a free transfer, with Championship side Queens Park Rangers likely to sign the defender after he underwent a medical with the English side, according to the Football Insider.

McNamara believes that Steven Gerrard allowing the left-back to leave this summer might be down to an incident between Wallace, Kenny Miller and Graeme Murty the season before last, and that the decision to allow the experienced 31-year-old to leave is surprising.

“I think there’s a bit of fallout from the year before. He’s not really featured at all. Rangers fans like Lee Wallace. If they’re letting somebody of good quality go in a position that they need then it doesn’t really make sense. Maybe there’s more to it than we know,” McNamara told the Football Insider.

OPINION

McNamara is clearly puzzled by Rangers allowing Wallace to depart Ibrox this summer, and he is probably right to be in the sense that Gerrard’s side somewhat struggled for consistency in his left-back position last term. Both Jon Flanagan and Borna Barisic were used in the left-back position during the season, with Wallace being limited to just three appearances. However, with neither Flanagan or Barisic fully convincing with their respective performances last term, Wallace will probably have considered himself unfortunate not to have been given more game time. That suggests that a move away from Ibrox might be the best solution for the defender, and it is one that Rangers could end up regretting next season if they do not find a more reliable left-back for next term. Wallace will be missed by most Rangers supporters and Gerrard will be hoping his decision to allow the defender to leave the club this summer does not come back to haunt him net term.
