Celtic are in the hunt to sign Ecuador U-20 international Sergio Quintero who plays his football for Ecuadorian Serie A side Imbabura SC, according to El Diario

The outlet report that the 20-year old defensive midfielder is being chased by the Scottish giants, alongside two other Ecuadorian clubs in El Nacional and Emelec.

El Diario report that Quintero is known as ‘The Machine’ and recently got on the score-sheet for his side during his nation’s victory against Uruguay in the U20’s World Cup.

Quintero was also part of the Ecuador side that won the 2019 South American U-20 Championship, defeating the likes of Colombia and Argentina to the trophy.

Good move for Celtic?

It’s hard to judge, as the player is effectively unknown in the United Kingdom.

However, it seems that there is potential with Quintero, as the defensive midfielder has been a prominent figure for the Ecuador U20’s side last season.

It could be a risk to bring a player in with so little experience playing at the top level, however at 20-years-old, it may be a gamble worth taking judging on the potential that the Ecuadorian has.

Likely to happen?

Again, it’s hard to say, however it seems likely that the midfield enforcer would stay in his home country with there being interest shown from other clubs in the same division as he is currently playing in.

With Quintero being so young, it seems likely that he will stay in Ecuador, and make the switch to a club in the same country that he is already playing in, however if not, this wouldn’t be the first time that a young player had made the switch to the other side of the world to play football at a higher standard.

There is no real telling on what will happen with this one, but it would be a strange move on the whole.
