Newcastle should steer well clear of a move to sign Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Kevin Trapp.

According to a live transfer blog from the Daily Express [Sunday, 9:35am] the Magpies are keen on the 28-year-old German international, who spent last season on loan at Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt.

This is one move which Newcastle should not look to do, for out of all the positions on the pitch that the Magpies need to strengthen, between the sticks is not one of them.

The St James’ Park club signed Martin Dubravka on a permanent deal last summer following his loan spell from Sparta Prague, and he has well and truly nailed down the first-choice spot in goal.

Dubravka has had a great impact for Newcastle in the season and a half he has been on Tyneside, and behind him, they have one great option who should be given a chance – Freddie Woodman.

The 22-year-old is not currently the club’s second choice goalkeeper – with either Karl Darlow or Rob Elliot holding that responsibility – but if Newcastle sign Trapp, Woodman would have no option but to leave and the England Under-21 international should definitely be given a shot.

Even if he does not get a chance, Elliot, 33, and Darlow, 28, give Newcastle plenty of options between the sticks and there is no need for the Magpies to go out and get another goalkeeper.

The likelihood is that next season, Dubravka will likely hold the number one spot for the whole season again after impressing so well, meaning that Elliot and Darlow will not even get a look in.

But to go and add another goalkeeper after that would be pointless, and there are plenty of other areas in the pitch – such as in midfield and attack – where the Magpies could do with reinforcements.
