OPINION

You have to feel for Newcastle United fans. Nothing is ever easy at St. James’ Park. After a decade and a half of being dragged down by one of the most toxic owners in English football, they have had their hopes raised, briefly, by the promise of a potential takeover from the Bin Zayed Group. But, as is so often the case of Tyneside, the deal is being complicated and held up by a general lack of information and the deliberate obtusity of the current owners. Mike Ashley never really gives anything away – expect absurdly big mugs – so perhaps this blanket silence is to be expected, but it does mean that Newcastle supporters have been left clutching at straws when it comes to finding out what’s going on. The latest thing to get them hot under the collar is a photo of a skip. This is where we’re at now people. More specifically, the skip, as posted by Gallowgate Shots on Twitter, contains a load of advertising hoardings bearing the Sports Direct logo. The signs have been taken down for maintenance and cleaning work, but that’s hasn’t stopped fans from dreaming. The chances are that they are going to be replaced immediately, but maybe, just maybe, this is the first sign that Ashley is leaving. Maybe.
