Tottenham appear to have missed out on midfielder target Santiago Sosa after Everton agreed a fee to sign the River Plate youngster, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claims that the Toffees have shaken hands on a £13.25million fee for the 20-year-old, who is now due to travel to Merseyside after he has finished representing Argentina at the Under-20 World Cup in Poland.

It is understood that Sosa was also wanted by Spurs before Everton agreed a fee to sign him, but there could be work permit issues when it comes to finalising a deal for the South American.

Good move for Everton?

It remains to be seen how well Sosa will do because he is not someone who has made a lot of senior appearances for River Plate, having only played five times in their first team.

However he is playing well at the Under-20 World Cup this summer having helped Argentina qualify from the group stages to set up a round of 16 showdown with Mali on Tuesday night.

Everton do seem to be paying over the odds for someone so inexperienced, but Marcel Brands and Marco Silva must have seen something in the 20-year-old to suggest he is worth that much money.

Tottenham, who are managed by Argentine Mauricio Pochettino and have a lot of ties to the South American nation, have also been interested, so that could be a good sign for the Toffees.

Likely to happen?

The Daily Mail reports that Everton could have issues when it comes to Sosa earning a work permit, which is not a surprise when you consider how little has proven himself on a first team level back in Argentina.

However the Blues could still press on with signing the midfielder and then loaning him out somewhere like they did with Henry Onyekuru, so the deal is not dead just yet.
