Alan Shearer has heaped praise on Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino after a season that’s seen him finish in the top-four in the Premier League and make the final of the Champions League.

It represents another massive step forward for the north London club under Pochettino and BBC pundit Shearer labelled the manager “phenomenal”.

Talking on Match of the Day (BBC1, Sunday, 10.30pm) Shearer said, “What a job Pochettino is doing at Tottenham. Phenomenal.

“When you consider they haven’t signed a player for 18 months. Moura was the last player they signed. Top-four finish again. Champions league final. Whatever happens in that CL final it’s still been a phenomenal season.”

It’s fine margins in football. Tottenham stumbled over the line in the Premier League, losing three of their last five games and winning just one. If the teams around them – Man United and Arsenal – hadn’t been even worse they might be facing having to win the Champions League to secure a place at the top table again next season. They were also looking down and out in the Champions League semi-final, three goals down on aggregate to Ajax. But this team doesn’t give up and with the top-four spot in the bag, Pochettino has a few weeks to prepare his side for the biggest game of their careers. Liverpool missed out on the Premier League title on the final day of the season and are favourites to lift the Champions League, but Spurs have a massive chance of upsetting the odds. It’s a one-off shootout over 90 minutes with a fellow Premier League team – the best opponent they could have hoped for in the Champions League. Harry Kane should be fit to play in the huge game in Madrid and that will give Tottenham a massive boost as they bid to finally prove that they can land silverware in north London – and what a trophy it would be to break the duck with.
