Chris Sutton ripped into Rangers for celebrating their 2-0 win over Celtic like they had won the World Cup.

Sutton claimed it was embarrassing to hear people state Glasgow was now “blue” and seemed to take an indirect dig at James Tavernier and Wes Foderingham in the process as his column featured tweets by the duo basically saying that.

Sutton pointed out that he thought the Gers’ celebrations were over the top as it was hardly a Herculean feat to beat Celtic due to Neil Lennon’s side having precious little left in the tank.

“Rangers are celebrating like they’ve won the World Cup when the reality is they have won sod all,” wrote Sutton in his Daily Record column.

“Last weekend’s victory against Celtic was the equivalent of a consolation goal yet we’ve seen all this nonsense about Glasgow being blue.

“It’s embarrassing. I would be ashamed to hear that guff if I was part of a squad that failed to win the league and got bundled out of both cups.

“Rangers won six games on the bounce when it didn’t matter and it was hardly a Herculean feat overcoming a Celtic side that was already over the line in the league and with precious little left in the tank.

“I’ve never seen second place and no trophies celebrated in Glasgow.”

OPINION

While Sutton moaning about Rangers beating Celtic could be put down to sour grapes, his point is hard to ignore on this occasion. While Steven Gerrard’s team were more than entitled to go wild after beating their archrivals comfortably last weekend, it’s debatable whether claiming Glasgow was blue was necessary. At the end of the day Celtic won the league and once again packed their trophy cabinet, so it’s not like the Gers can claim they have dominated the football scene in the city this season. However if Gerrard’s side build on their victory over the Hoops next season and actually bring some silverware to Ibrox, then they can feel free to paint the town blue. Rangers should be dreaming big and have grand ambitious to end Celtic’s domestic dominance as given that they have achieved a couple of victories over their rivals, they’re more than capable of making the Hoops sweat at the very least.
