Aston Villa coach John Terry took a cheeky dig at Leeds United by mocking the spy scandal that surrounded the club earlier in the season.

Terry featured in Derby County coach Jody Morris’ Instagram story, as uploaded to Twitter by dcfcpodcast, on Friday and was seen doing the ‘Spygate’ celebration that the Rams’ players were spotted doing, as seen on Sky Sports, following their victory over Leeds in the play-off semi-final.

The Villans coach made the gesture after Morris joked that Derby had “another spy in their camp” due to being out for a drink with Terry ahead of the play-off final where Aston Villa take on the Rams.

OPINION

Terry may have been having a laugh with Morris ahead of the Championship play-off but his antics weren’t the most professional, nor will they be appreciated by Leeds fans. The spy scandal dominated the headlines earlier in the season as no one could quite believe that Marcelo Bielsa had sent a spy to personally watch Derby, let alone that he had spied on every club in the division ahead of playing them up to that point.  However once Leeds got punished, wrongly or rightly, the memory of the spy scandal seem to fade. Yet it seems spygate jokes are back once again due to the fact it was Derby that ended Leeds’ dreams of reaching the Premier League this season. While some seem to relish in Leeds suffering disappointment, you think former professional footballers like Morris and Terry wouldn’t publicly mock a club over something that should have been put to bed by now. Given that both Derby’s Morris and Villa’s Terry don’t come off in the best light from a Leeds’ perspective in the video above, it’s hard to know if they’d have any preference about who wins the play-off final.
