Graeme Souness shared that he thought Celtic would be crazy not to hire Neil Lennon as their permanent manager but admitted as a Rangers fan he didn’t want it to happen.

The former Gers boss revealed that Lennon was as good as anyone he had ever worked with and hinted that he thought if the Celtic boss secured the treble this season it was enough to have him given the job on a full-time basis.

“I worked with Neil Lennon for two years in television and he’s as good as anyone I’ve worked with,” said Souness in an interview with Sky Sports.

“He gets his thinking from Martin O’Neill who got his from Brian Clough.

“Neil Lennon knows his stuff. I hope they don’t employ him, as a Rangers supporter. But I want him to keep the job as he’s a good guy. They’d be crazy to get rid of him.

“If Neil wins the treble how much better can it get? He has fulfilled what he could do.”

Lennon has been in temporary charge of Celtic since February after Brendan Rodgers’ sudden departure to Leicester City.

OPINION

Souness makes a good point, Lennon has finished the job Rodgers’ started this season and what else could he have done? The experienced manager has ensured that the trophy cabinet was filled as per usual and would clearly keep the trophies rolling next season. The only doubt to be had about Lennon’s case to be the next full-time manager of Celtic is whether he’d be able to take the club forward. Celtic have dominated domestically in recent seasons and they should be aiming to achieve more in the Champions League. Lennon’s CV doesn’t suggest he could be the man to do that, even if he did fare better than Rodgers in Europe, however maybe he has learnt a thing or two since he last tried to crack the prestigious tournament. However while the Hoops have found it easy in Scotland in recent times, Souness clearly believes Rangers are going to have a chance of being a bigger threat to Celtic then before in the upcoming campaigns. The former Gers boss cheekily saying he hopes Lennon doesn’t get the Celtic job full-time, suggests that he thinks the Gers have a chance of overcoming their archrivals if the Hoops put the wrong man in charge.
