Rangers club historian David Mason has predicted that Steven Gerrard will one day manage his former club Liverpool if he manages to impress during his reign at Ibrox.

Gerrard took over as Rangers manager last summer and has made some progress with the club this season, with his side heading for a second place finish in the SPFL behind Celtic, who they have managed to beat twice in the league this campaign.

Mason believes that Gerrard could be following a similar path to Graeme Souness, who won three titles as Rangers manager before heading back to Liverpool to manage the Reds, but suggested that the 38-year-old would need to ensure he performs well at Ibrox before any return to Anfield would be possible.

“There has been history in that. Souness went to Liverpool but acknowledged it was the worst thing he’s done,” Mason told the Daily Star.

“I think it’s inevitable that if Steven was successful was Rangers and Liverpool were looking, Steven’s name would be in the frame. There are several ifs and buts connected with that.”

“I’m pretty sure if he was successful, he would be favoured for a return to the Kop. But the way Klopp is going, it could be a few years.”

OPINION

It will be very interesting to see what Gerrard manages to achieve at Rangers in the next few seasons, after the 38-year-old has made a solid start to his career in charge at Ibrox. However, despite making some progress Rangers will end the season without a trophy, which is something the Englishman will be needing to address next campaign if he going to be considered a success in Scotland. Mason is probably right that the connection between Gerrard and Liverpool will always mean that the 38-year-old would be a potential target for the English club should he manage to have a successful spell as Rangers manager. Although he is also right to point out that Gerrard first of all needs to concentrate on establishing himself as a successful manager with Rangers, before even contemplating taking on another job elsewhere. Next season looks like it is going to be a pivotal one for both Rangers and their manager, with the club needing to start picking up trophies on a regular basis again.
