Adrian Durham slowly said not a chance after a Celtic fan asked whether Rangers should give the Hoops a guard of honour at Ibrox next weekend when the pair clash.

A Hoops supporter called into Durham’s talkSPORT show on Friday to ask his thoughts on the Gers giving Celtic a guard of honour, given that Neil Lennon’s side could wrap up the title by avoiding defeat against Aberdeen on Saturday.

“Not a chance,” said Durham on talkSPORT (Friday May 3rd, 16:48).

Durham’s three-word verdict was quickly followed up by his co-host Darren Gough interrogating the Celtic fan, named Jerry, to find out whether it was the done thing in Scotland.

OPINION

If Celtic wrap up the title against Rangers then surely their archrivals need to respect the tradition of giving the champions a guard of honour. While it will be a painful experience for the club, for supporters and just anyone associated with the Gers, not doing it will just spark unnecessary controversy.  If Gers players really have an issue with it, they should sure just treat it as extra motivation for next season. If any member of Steven Gerrard’s squad feels embarrassed about having to stand there and clap Celtic, then they should take it upon themselves to up their game in their next campaign and reflect on why they’re not champions this season. The Gers were doing so well to keep pace in the title race earlier in the season but then fell away at the start of the year. When you consider how much progress the club have made, it’s acceptable that Gerrard will end his first season at Ibrox trophy-less. However with Celtic facing a difficult summer, the Gers should be seriously envisioning themselves pipping the Hoops to the post the next time around.
