Celtic defender Cristian Gamboa could move to FC Copenhagen upon the expiration of his Hoops contract this summer, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper claims on their live transfer blog [Thursday, 10:54am] that the 29-year-old Costa Rican international has rejected a trip back to his homeland with Deportiva Alajuelense in favour of a move to the Danish champions, who have been tracking the player.

The Daily Record add that the 70-time international, who has only made 16 Premiership league starts since joining from West Brom in the summer of 2016, will not be offered a new deal in Glasgow.

Should Gamboa move to Copenhagen, he will have the chance to play Champions League football after the club’s league triumph last season saw them placed in the second qualifying round of next season’s competition.

OPINION

If there is one player who Celtic fans will be glad to see the back of, it is Cristian Gamboa. He has performed far below expectations for the Hoops in the last few years – if he has performed at all – and there will be no hesitation from the club to see him go. For the best part of his spell with Celtic, he has played second fiddle to Mikael Lustig and it does not seem like he has enjoyed his time at Parkhead. It will be very interesting to see if he does indeed move to Copenhagen. Not only will the club offer him the chance to revitalise his career – which has stalled badly since his West Brom days – but it could also offer him the chance to play Champions League football. It may not be the Champions League proper, but it’s a massive upgrade on the sort of match action he is currently enjoying at Celtic.
