Boyd on Mourinho at Celtic

Kris Boyd dismissed the idea that Celtic were about to announce Jose Mourinho as their next manager.

Italian journalist Gianluca di Marzio claimed via his personal website on Sunday that the Hoops had offered a deal to the Portuguese boss and that he was currently considering it.

However Boyd when asked about Mourinho potentially being at Celtic, claimed he thought it was just a PR stunt and that while there had been big names in Scottish football, it didn’t seem realistic.

“There’s more chance of me shooting an under-par going round here today (he was speaking at a golf course) then Jose Mourinho coming to Celtic,” said Boyd on Sky Sports News (13:53, Monday May 6th).

“For me it’s a PR stunt from we don’t know, from either Celtic or Jose Mourinho’s people, more likely Jose Mourinho’s.

“I think Celtic have rubbished the reports, I mean they might have a bit of money but not the money to go and get Jose Mourinho, and I don’t think he would want to entertain Scottish football either.

“Yes there have been some big names here but let’s be realistic, Jose Mourinho doesn’t need Scottish football.

“He will be back, he will be back soon in a big job and yes Celtic is a big club but nothing in terms of finances like the jobs Mourinho has had in the past.”

OPINION

Does anyone disagree with Boyd? Surely not. The Kilmarnock striker is right to regard Celtic as a big club but just as spot-on to claim they don’t have the finances Mourinho is used to working with. The Portuguese manager has been in charge of clubs like Manchester United and Real Madrid so it seems like the Hoops wouldn’t be appealing to him. Both those European giants treat money like it’s no object but Celtic are much more sensible than that. The only way Mourinho would rock up at Celtic is if they throw crazy money at him and really change how the club is currently run. It’s hard to see that happening. Also with no disrespect meant to Scottish football, it doesn’t seem like it’s at a level at this time where it could attract Mourinho. Scottish football is underrated but with there being so many problems surrounding it, you feel Mourinho wouldn’t consider a job in Scotland until the wider issues are addressed.
