Rangers are in the hunt to sign Rennes centre-back Mexer, according to L’Equipe.

The French newspaper has claimed that Steven Gerrard has been spotted at a restaurant in Rennes amid the Gers’ interest in the 44-times Mozambique international, whose deal with the French Cup winners expires at the end of the season.

L’Equipe suggests that Gerrard’s trip across the English Channel was to do with Rangers’ pursuit of Mexer.

Good move for Rangers?

Mexer is unlikely to be a defender who many football fans up in Scotland will have heard of, but when you take a closer look at the 30-year-old, you see that he would actually be a very good addition at Ibrox in the summer.

The former Sporting CP defender has made 41 appearances in all competitions for Rennes this season, scoring two goals in the process.

He scored a great header against Paris Saint-Germain in the French Cup final last week and helped Rennes reach the Europa League knock-out stages earlier in the campaign.

As Mexer is set to be available on a free transfer in the summer, it is a no-brainer for Rangers to sign the Mozambican defender.

Likely to happen?

L’Equipe report that Rennes do want Mexer to sign a new contract and that is bound to be problematic for Rangers.

Gerrard will no doubt want to sign the 30-year-old on a free transfer and after the success he has enjoyed with the Ligue 1 club this term, there is a good chance that he will pen a new deal.

Rangers need to beat Rennes to the punch here and table a pre-contract offer as soon as possible.
