Wolves chief Jeff Shi has revealed that the club will not be looking to bring in too many players over the summer transfer window after holding talks with manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

The Molineux outfit brought in a number of high profile signings last summer, including a record breaking deal for Adama Traore, after their promotion from the Championship and they helped the Midlands club finish an impressive seventh place in the Premier League.

Lifting the lid on what fans can expect this summer, Shi confirmed that the plans would be to target quality over quantity, with a focus on retaining a smaller squad for Nuno to call upon.

“I have talked with Nuno and he thought the philosophy will be the same,” he told the Express and Star.

“We will still try to keep a small squad and will not think that because we have one more tournament to compete in, we will have to get more players, because if you go out of the tournament early you then have to think about how you deal with them.

“We will not do this kind of thing, we will still try to keep a short squad – as Nuno wants – but in the meantime it requires higher quality from our academy players because sometimes what you need is them; they can step up, they can help the team.

“If we go to Europe – fingers crossed – I don’t think it will just be about improving the first-team.”

Opinion

Wolves fans cannot really have too many complaints over how their transfer plans last summer and in January impacted their season and so they should keep faith that continuing in such fashion will bring the club more success. Nuno’s management has been brilliant while Shi has backed him as and when needed, resulting in a squad full of quality but perhaps lacking in depth. Of course, when you suffer as few injuries as Wolves have done this season just gone, why would you think about changing things at all? The real question that needs to be asked is whether their low rate of setbacks was fortune or as a result of their training methods and game preparation. Either way, one or two serious problems which leaves their top players sidelined could see Wolves flounder in the Premier League next season. Maybe they should look at getting a couple of bodies on board just to bolster things up.
