COMMENTARY

The Sun reported on Friday that West Ham were considering offering attacker Andy Carroll a new contract and it went down rather well with a number of Hammers supporters. The national newspaper claimed that there was a chance the forward’s future could still be at the London Stadium despite the player’s current contract being only weeks away from becoming a free agent. Up until this report, it sounded as if Carroll was on his way out of the club as there hadn’t been many positive reports that the Hammers wanted to keep him. Yet it seems the London club are open to the idea of keeping the attacker despite his terrible injury record. The Sun’s report states that Carroll has cost the Hammers £6million this year in wages and other costs alone, and all they had got in return from him was one goal. Despite these damning stats, it seems many West Ham were thrilled over the thought of Carroll staying, especially as the source in The Sun’s report hinted the that any new deal for the player would basically be a pay as you play as he’d only get a basic salary.
