Tottenham ace Harry Winks is still hoping to secure a place in England’s UEFA Nations League squad despite undergoing groin surgery, according to the Daily Mail.

The £50,000-a-week midfielder [Spotrac] went under the knife last week to help fix the issue that has seen him sidelined since a brief cameo against Crystal Palace in early April.

According to the report, however, Winks is hoping to be fit in three weeks time, a projection that would give him a chance of making Gareth Southgate’s England squad, and the Champions League final, should Spurs make it.

OPINION

This will be a massive boost for England and Tottenham fans everywhere. Winks has been a real miss during his absence, and the midfielder has gone a long way to cementing his status as a key player for Spurs by not even kicking a ball. His work in the centre of the park, so tidy and efficient, is a key part of Mauricio Pochettino’s squad, and without him, there have been games where Spurs have really struggled. Take the midweek defeat to Ajax. For large parts of that match, especially in the early exchanges, Tottenham were completely overrun in the centre of the park, and the game was crying out for Winks’ calming influence to come in, break up the play, and find his teammates with a range of simple passing. Those same attributes could make him a real asset for England too. Players like Winks will never go out of fashion, and if he can get himself fit in time for the summer, he could go a long way to convincing Gareth Southgate of his importance at international level too.
