Tottenham are leading a charge from a number of European clubs for PSV Eindhoven winger Steven Bergwijn this summer, according to Sky Sports.

The broadcaster claim on their website that Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has been bowled over by the Dutch international, who has five caps to his name, and is a huge fan, leaving the north London side at the front of the queue in the transfer window.

It is stated that Bergwijn is expected to leave for a fee of £35million and that Ajax, PSV’s league rivals, are keen but that the Eredivisie runners up would not be keen on selling to the side who beat them to the Dutch top flight title.

Opinion

If Tottenham are currently at the front of the queue, they had best get a bid in and Bergwijn snapped up – otherwise another big spender will come in and snap him up from under their nose. He is going to be in huge demand this summer after a dazzling season for his club, scoring 15 goals and notching up another 13 assists across all competitions – although none of his strikes came on the biggest stage that is the Champions League. That £35million price tag is a hefty one and one which might ward a number of clubs off but if Spurs are serious, they will have to meet it. It would be a real statement of intent after 18 months of no signings but if they are going to take themselves to the next level then they need to be improving year on year. Would Bergwijn bring them what they need? He is quite clearly a prodigal talent with a lot of ability but the Premier League is a different kettle of fish – we have seen so many exciting talents fail to make the grade from the Eredivisie.
