Nobody would have given Tottenham any chance of making the Champions League final at the midway point in the group stage.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side had picked up just one point from their opening three matches, and looked as if they needed a minor miracle to help bail them out of a slump that seemed for all the world as if it was going to halt their European dream before it properly got up and running.

But, if it was a minor miracle they needed, it was a minor miracle they got.

And what is more, it wouldn’t be the last.

After scraping through they group stage, they have now ensured a place in the final on June 1st with back to back wins propelled forward by the highest of dramas.

VAR reviews, last minute winners; Spurs’ run has had it all, and it might not be done just yet.

But still, somehow, it might not be enough to convince their manager to stay.

Pochettino has been honest in his assessment of things in north London, and his comments will terrify supporters.

As quoted in the Daily Mail, he said: “I am open for everything. Of course, I love to work, I love Tottenham, I love to be here every day. I enjoy it a lot.

“Our effort was massive and my motivation is to be here and to work hard, to try to achieve all that the club wants to achieve.

“But the problem is, I need to know what we need to achieve or what we are going to fight for. That is the most important.

“In five years we have achieved a lot of things. But now it’s what’s next, that is my point.”

This sounds like a manager desperately seeking some kind of reassurance from above about the level of backing he will receive from this point onwards.

The Argentine cannot be expected to keep on pulling of miraculous achievement after miraculous achievement on a shoestring budget, and he needs Daniel Levy to tell him where the money is going to come from.

If the chairman doesn’t, then who could really blame Pochettino if he were to walk away from the club he clearly adores?
