Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has hinted at the need for the club to improve their squad this summer if they are to move to the next level.

Pochettino’s side are currently in 3rd place in the Premier League and on course for qualifying for the Champions League, where they have reached the semi-finals stage this season, again next term.

However, Tottenham were beaten 1-0 at home by Ajax in the first-leg of their Champions League semi-final, with injuries to the likes of Harry Kane and Harry Winks and the suspension of Heung Min-Son leaving Pochettino’s squad short on quality during the game.

In an interview with the BBC’s Premier League Show on BBC Two on Thursday, Pochettino hinted at the need for Spurs to improve their squad if they are to go to the next level, saying, “We achieved a lot of things, we overachieved maybe. Because of our ambition and the way that we work, we’re now in a very good position.”

The Argentine added: “The problem is: what do we want for the next chapter? Now we’ve finished the training ground and the stadium, what does the club want to achieve in the next one, two, three or five years and what are the fans expecting?”

OPINION

Pochettino has done an excellent job in the last few years, managing to establish his Tottenham side amongst the sides regularly finishing in the Premier League’s top four and qualifying for the Champions League. The Argentine has had to work with a shoe-string budget compared with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool, with Spurs not even making a signing in either window this season as they prepared to move into their new state of the art stadium. Despite this Pochettino has once again guided Spurs to a top four finish, barring an unlikely collapse in the closing weeks of the season, and has his side in the Champions League semi-finals. However, the loss against Ajax, without both Kane and Heung Min-Son, showed the lack of depth in top level quality in Spurs’ squad. Pochettino will need to be backed in the summer transfer if he is able to take Spurs to a position where they can compete for and win the major domestic and European honours. Tottenham fans will be in agreement with their manager that the summer window will be vital for the club if they are to begin to compete at the highest level in the Premier League and in Europe.
