Adrian Durham claimed Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez will apologise to Liverpool fans if the Magpies beat the Reds on Saturday.

Benitez’s current side are set to host Liverpool at St James Park on Saturday and if Jurgen Klopp’s side lose it would be a significant blow to their Premier League title ambitions.

Durham revealed that due to Benitez’s affection for Reds fans from his time in charge of Liverpool; if the Magpies did hurt Liverpool’s title ambitions then the Magpies boss manager would come out and apologise.

“Imagine this if Newcastle beat Liverpool, I’m 100% sure Rafa will apologise to Liverpool fans,” said Durham on talkSPORT (16:21, Friday May 3rd).

OPINION

Durham has to be joking right? The broadcaster shared his opinion in a serious tone but surely Benitez wouldn’t apologise for beating Liverpool? Reds fans may still hold a candle for Benitez and he may still care about them, but he is a professional whose current goals are simply to ensure the Magpies do as well as possible. While Newcastle won’t pull up any trees in the Premier League by earning another three points, the aim of the game is to get as many points on the board as possible. Also while Benitez has near untouchable status at St James Park when it comes to how Magpies supporters feel about him, would they be thrilled over their side’s manager apologising for winning? Surely they’d be a bit miffed. If anything Benitez will be thrilled to get a win over Liverpool on Saturday, as it would be a big deal for the Magpies, so will just be respectful by hardly celebrating publicly if anything.
