Mick Quinn has delivered his verdict on the Newcastle United takeover rumours, claiming that he just wants an owner who can match Rafa Benitez’s ambition.

The Toon Army are being linked with a buyout from Dubai-based billionaire Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan, as reported by The Sun, and Quinn has suggested that he would be happy to see it.

Speaking on talkSPORT (May 27th, 6.30pm), he said: “I want an owner to come in and match Rafa Benitez’s ambition.

“He’s a world class manager. He wants to take Newcastle to the next level, which is a Europa League place next season.

“Build on that and maybe an FA Cup or a League Cup. Try and win some sort of trophy.

“It will be everything crossed in my case. This is what I want for them fans.

“And sign Rafa by the way. Nail him first.”

OPINION

Quinn speaks for the Toon Army here. Ask any reasonable Newcastle fans what they want, and the first thing they say won’t be world class signings or trophies galore. They’ll tell you that they just want a chance to compete, an opportunity to hold their heads up high. For far too long now the club has been held back by Mike Ashley’s toxic ownership, but these latest rumours have given the fanbase something to hope for and something to cling on to. Of course, it must be said that nothing is official yet, and all of this talk could still lead to nothing. That would be a crushing blow, but not one that would be wholly surprising given Ashley’s previous. That being said, there seems to something a bit different about this one. Updates actually feel like updates and you can see a viable way that any prospective deal could be gotten over the line. There is still a long way to go, and nothing will be assured until the ink us dry on the deeds to St. James’ Park, but this could be the beginning of something amazing on Tyneside.
