Darren Gough mooted the possibility of attacker Romelu Lukaku returning to Everton to solve their goal scoring problems.

The retired England cricketer shared that he thought the one thing that the Toffees were struggling with, was finding a prolific striker to regularly call upon.

Gough seemed to suggest that the last time they had one was when Lukaku was at the club and then he seemed in awe at the idea of the current Manchester United forward returning to Goodison Park.

“I think the one thing they’ve always struggled with for a while now, is a striker who can score the goals,” said Gough on talkSPORT (Friday May 3rd 16:06).

“They had Lukaku obviously but he was on loan, obviously gone off and done what he is doing, could he go back? Could he go back?”

OPINION

Gough is spot-on to claim Everton’s lack of clinical striker causes them to struggle. The Toffees have had a rollercoaster season regarding their form and at times, their lack of a lethal finisher has cost them points. While Dominic Calvert-Lewin has impressed this season, would anyone bank on him to score when he is through on goal? No, because he has missed so many chances this season that you’re never certain that’s he is going to score until the ball hits the back of the net. However that wasn’t the case when Lukaku played for the Toffees. The 25-year-old scored 87 goals in 166 appearances for the Toffees and if he returned, then Marco Silva’s side would be a more formidable force going forward. While Lukaku has struggled to deliver the goods at Manchester United, though he has managed 12 goals this season, it’s still easy to imagine him being fantastic at the Toffees. While Gough is only suggesting the idea of Lukaku returning, as soon as he said it, it was like he convinced himself it was a possibility.
