Everton’s plan to bring 6ft 3in Chelsea loanee Kurt Zouma to the club on a permanent basis now looks in serious doubt, according to the Liverpool Echo.

Chelsea have had their two-year transfer ban upheld, meaning that they are unable to sign players over the age of 16.  The significance of this development is that Chelsea will want to keep hold of senior players to provide squad depth, meaning the chances of Zouma returning to Goodison Park look slim.

The Blues had hoped to secure the 24-year-old’s signature on a long term basis, the Frenchman has made 31 Premier League appearances this campaign and has been one of Everton’s most consistent performers.

Now it could hinge on an appeal that Chelsea have confirmed they will make.

OPINION

This is a major blow for Marco Silva and his team. The deal now seems highly unlikely given Chelsea’s circumstances and Everton may have to reevaluate their options and alternatives as a result of the news. If they are determined to land their man, Everton may have to pay over the odds to tempt Chelsea into selling the Frenchman. Phil Jagielka is now 36 and Everton have just Yerry Mina and Michael Keane as their main central defenders.  Zouma has been key to an Everton defence that has kept the fourth most clean sheets in the league, just one behind Chelsea who have 15. Gary Cahill is set to depart Chelsea in the summer and this leaves the side one man short, meaning Zouma may be crucial in terms providing squad depth and cover. Zouma will have the chance to fight for a starting place with Chelsea.
