Arsenal have bid £10.5million for Gremio defender Walter Kannemann, according to Calciomercato.

The Gunners have moved for the Argentinian defender in a bid to solidify their back-line.

The central defender has been capped five times by Argentina after winning his first cap back in September and has since gone on to become a wanted man.

Arsenal are not the only ones who want Kannemann though and the Gremio star also has suitors in Italy with Inter Milan and Sampdoria monitoring his situation.

The 28-year-old signed for Gremio from Mexican club Atlas in 2016 for less than £900,000.

Good move for Arsenal?

Unai Emery must improve his defensive options this summer. Laurent Koscielny will turn 34-years-old next term and may not have another year left in him. Alongside that, Shkodran Mustafi had an awful season and came in for some serious criticism from fans. If Arsenal are going to reach the top-four they must act and significantly improve next season – this is only possible if they have a strong summer. Kannemann is relatively unheard of and has had little experience at a high level, though. Arsenal should surely go for a bigger name and really splash out on a defender who is guaranteed to solve their defensive problems.

Likely to happen?

With the report claiming that Arsenal have made a move for the defender, it looks like a deal could be on the cards. And Arsenal will be making defensive recruits this summer. Is Kannemann the answer? We’re not sure but he’d surely jump at a move to the Premier League. It had previously been reported that Everton were in negotiations for him in the summer so he’s got history with a move to the Premier League. It’s early days though. The window has only just opened and we’re not convinced Arsenal are going to move for him that quickly.
