West Brom would have to pay a £500,000 compensation fee to take Danny Cowley from Lincoln and hire him as their next manager, according to Press Association reporter Nick Mashiter.

The reliable journalist claimed via his personal Twitter account on Thursday afternoon that Cowley, 40, is a candidate to become the Baggies’ next permanent manager as James Shan has only been in interim charge since Darren Moore was sacked in March.

West Brom were defeated by Aston Villa in the play-off semi-finals and will remain in the Championship next season, so it seems as though chief executive Mark Jenkins has turned his attention to Cowley, who has a seriously impressive CV.

OPINION

Cowley ticks every box for West Brom and Jenkins should not hesitate to pay that £500,000 fee to lure the ex-Braintree manager away from Sincil Bank. Since taking charge at Lincoln, Cowley has won two promotions in three season, lifted the EFL Trophy and led the Imps to the FA Cup quarter-finals when they were still a non-league club. He is someone with fresh ideas and is a great character, so he is certainly someone that West Brom fans will come to live if Jenkins pushes the boat out in the coming weeks. Jenkins may have to move fast though because Cowley is bound to be someone in demand due to his relatively low compensation fee. West Brom are not usually a club to hire managers who are already employed, but this should be the one time where they break their trend and hire someone who is clearly ready to prove himself in the second-tier.
