Newcastle United are in the hunt to sign Olympiakos central-midfielder Mady Camara, according to the London Evening Standard.

The newspaper claims that the 22-year-old Guinea international is attracting a lot of attention after a stellar debut season in Greece’s top-flight, and it currently appears as though Watford are leading the race for his signature.

It is understood that clubs from Germany and Italy have also watched the £12million-rated midfielder this season, but he could be interested in a move to Vicarage Road in the summer transfer window.

The Evening Standard adds that Camara is unlikely to make a concrete decision on his future until after he represents Guinea at the upcoming African Cup of Nations tournament.

Good move for Newcastle?

Camara has been great for Olympiakos this season and as Newcastle are going to need to add to their central midfield options in the summer, the 22-year-old is definitely someone that the Tyneside club should be trying to sign.

He has made 36 appearances in all competitions for the Greek giants this term, scoring six goals and supplying two assists in the process and due to him being quite young, he could be able to make the transition to the Premier League.

Watford have a good record of signing relatively unknown players and having them impress at Vicarage Road, so maybe the Magpies are barking up the right tree here by pursuing Camara.

Likely to happen?

Watford definitely seem to be winning the race to sign Camara but after Newcastle sealed quite the coup when they got Miguel Almiron in January, you cannot rule the Magpies out of this one.

Mike Ashley could give Rafa Benitez, or whoever is in charge, £12million to sign Camara, especially if someone like Jonjo Shelvey leaves and boosts the bank balance.
