Manchester United are in the hunt to sign Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye this summer, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claims that Gueye played his final match for the Toffees in their the trip to North London to face Tottenham on Sunday, adding that the Merseysiders are only willing to part with the Senegalese for at least £40million.

The Daily Mail report also says that instead of selling Paul Pogba, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Gueye – who has been capped 63 times by his country – will be the perfect player to unlock the Frenchman’s ability in midfield.

Good move for Everton?

It wouldn’t be the end of the world for Everton if Gueye left. While he has appeared 32 times in the Premier League this season – 34 times if you count two FA Cup run-outs – he has only managed two assists overall and hasn’t added that much to the Everton team this term. As for United, they desperately need someone to get the best out of Paul Pogba and it would be a real kick in the teeth to see Gueye go to Old Trafford and unlock the best the Frenchman has to offer.

Likely to happen?

This could all come down to whether fellow midfield partner Andre Gomes can be secured on a long-term deal from Barcelona. The 25-year-old is currently on loan and is set to go back to Spain after the game against Tottenham, but Everton are reportedly keen to open talks with Gomes and tie him down to a Goodison Park stay. If that happens, the likelihood of Gueye being needed in the Everton team will decrease massively.
